Residents

Residents join The Edge team for a period of three months to complete a project aligning with the programming theme for the quarter. Our current Residents, Kirsty Boyle and Nathen Street are DIY Tech focused. You can also read about our past Residents.

Kirsty Boyle

Kirsty BoyleFor the last ten years Kirsty has been the only woman ever permitted to train in traditional Japanese mechanical doll craft under the last remaining Karakuri Master in Japan. Kirsty’s fascination with movement, theatre and technology has led to a specialisation in robotics. Throughout her career, time spent tinkering with artificial intelligence has propelled Kirsty into envy-inducing circuits of the globe in a whirlwind of residencies, exhibitions, shows, collaborations and screenings. Her passport and CV bear brands from Germany, Spain, Switzerland, China, Austria, New Zealand, Japan, Turkey and all over the land of Oz. Heading back home to Brissy for her residency at The Edge, Kirsty will bring an international flavour to proceedings, working with collaborators from all over the place in her live Love the Robots shows and her exhibition Abstraction Contraption.

Nathen Street

Nathen StreetNathen’s DIY tool kit differs a little from the one you might find at your local hardware store. He’s traded the pencil, oxy torch, mitre, axe and angle grinder for Processing, Openframeworks, Max/MSP, Ableton Live and Arduino. Nathen is not building walls and ceilings; he builds his own software and hardware. He’s not creating a new lounge or rumpus room; he’s manufacturing immersive environments that make the invisible visible.

Nathen will provide The Edge community with a platform to solder, design and construct works of luminescent installations, taking the form of handcrafted and battery powered chandeliers. Read more about Nathen’s DIY Chandelier workshops.
