The Space

The Edge’s physical component is at Brisbane’s Cultural Centre at South Bank, housed in the former Cultural Centre Auditorium building and associated spaces. It’s a state-of-the-art facility that provides creative spaces and innovative programs; a welcoming place, buzzing with people inventing, creating, presenting and meeting peers.

The building is equipped with facilities like meeting spaces and open wireless internet, plus tools such as hardware and software for sound recording, video and filmmaking, and graphic design.

The Queensland Government provided $7.9 million to transform the building.

Window bays

A series of river front window bays are spaces that can be booked for structured collaborations, self-directed group meetings and production, gaming tournaments or creative installations.

These are equipped with projectors, screens, speaker systems, iPod docks and softwired tables for informal meetings, production, prototyping and presentation.

Screening and broadcasting

The building itself is a medium for screening and projecting content produced at The Edge with broadcast opportunities inside (the Auditorium, window bays) and outside (The Edge plaza, the river, the Riverside Expressway) and anywhere there’s a wall.

Media labs

Media labs are designed and equipped for dedicated activity:

  • Lab 1: Screen and Sound is for screen-based production focused around sound, video, gaming and animation. Groups of up to 20 participate in projects and workshops, around themes including VJing DJing, machinima, video game programming, music and/or soundscape production. Includes high spec PC and Mac computers, Wacom Cintiq Tablets, projectors, wireless control and a range of software – Adobe CS4, Final Cut Studio 2 and Logic Studio.
  • Lab 2: Mobile and Physical for basic screen–based production geared toward software, hardware and electronics workshops. Like a digital tool shed, this lab is equipped with high spec Mac and PC laptops, projectors, a range of production software for workshops in electronics, hardware-hacking, re-engineering and reconfiguring, software coding, mobile application and web 2 and 3 development. Contemporary technology is contrasted with a set of older or more idiosyncratic tools, such as Super8, Polaroid or Lomo and digital hardware artworks to inspire and intrigue.
  • Lab 3: Record and Mix is for speech, music and other audio recording and mixing. This compact, sound proofed studio includes near-professional equipment and specialist software.

The Auditorium

The Auditorium is the largest space and focal point for major events like conferences, gigs and exhibitions.

Mostly open and flexible, it can also be subdivided into smaller spaces for workshops, think tanks or any type of creative work.
