The Advanced Joomla workshop is part of the Joomla short course program. There are three levels of workshops in this short course and each workshop can be booked individually to help you customise your experience. You can complete one session, or one at each level. It’s up to you. However, if you do choose to complete only intermediate and advanced level workshops please ensure you meet the minimum requirements with respect to prior learning. One-on-one sessions are also available for more personalised support.
Intro to Joomla
This workshop will give you an introduction to the features and functionality of the Joomla Content Management System, version 3. You’ll learn how to navigate the administrator interface, create and edit basic content, and create menus. We’ll also point you in the direction of the resources available for documentation and support in the Joomla User Community. Throughout the session you will work to build your own fully functional Joomla website, which you’ll be accessible long after the workshop is complete.
No prior knowledge is required for this workshop. We expect that you will be a beginner. However, being familiar with a Mac computer is helpful. Once you have completed this workshop you will be prepared to take on the Intermediate Joomla workshop.
3:30-5:30pm, 1 August
6-8pm, 6 August
3:30-5:30pm, 22 August
Building on the basics, this workshop will get you using some of the more powerful aspects of the Joomla Content Management System version 3. You’ll learn how to extend the functionality of Joomla via components, modules and plugins, and get an understanding of Joomla User Management and Access Control Levels. Throughout the session you will work to build your own fully functional Joomla website, complete with ‘members-only’ content.
To participate in this workshop you must have a basic understanding of basic Joomla functions and features, including the administrator interface, content creation process menus. If these skills aren’t in your toolkit, try out the intro session first or book in for a one-on-one session prior to this workshop. Once you have completed this workshop you will be prepared to take on the Advanced Joomla workshop.
1-5pm, 17 August
1-5pm, 25 August
This workshop is aimed specifically at participants who have at least a basic knowledge of PHP programming and who want to use the elements available in the Joomla Content Management System version 3 codebase. You’ll learn about template modification, core output overrides, the MVC architecture of Joomla, and the basic structure of components, modules, and plugins. This is a hands-on workshop, but not for the feint-of-heart. You will be using a text editor to examine the most important structures in the Joomla codebase, and will be exposed to some fundamental object-oriented programming patterns and principles.
To participate in this workshop you will need to have a strong understanding of the Joomla Content Management System. If these skills aren’t in your toolkit, try out the intermediate session first or book in for a one-on-one session prior to this workshop.
1-6pm, 1 September
One-on-one sessions are conducted with our expert facilitators and are designed to give you more personalised support in your skill area of interest. The focus of these sessions is on your skill development. Our facilitator will work with you to troubleshoot any issues you may have, explain specific techniques, assist to progress projects, extend or reiterate content covered in workshops and give advice in their area of expertise. The facilitator is not available to complete work for you or to consult on ongoing projects.
Your one-on-one session is booked by the hour (ie. one ticket equals one hour). If you require more than one hour, please book more than one ticket. Times are limited to those available in the ticketing options, though if there really is no suitable option on this list please contact us.
Sessions will be held onsite at The Edge. If you require a computer or specialist equipment for your session please note this in the ticket registration process. Otherwise feel free to bring in your own laptop to work from, providing it has the software you require.
When you register for a one-on-one session you will be asked to provide a short, specific explanation of what you are hoping to get out of your time. Please note that if we feel this is out of scope for our facilitators we may choose to cancel your session, with notice and a full refund.
