The iStreet Skills xChange Crew have been out and about giving demos of the media lab. A couple of weeks ago the iStreet Crew headed out to Westfield Shopping Centre at North Lakes to show off the Lab to the young people that gather there every Thursday night.
Young people from the north side of Brisbane pour into the food court at the North Lakes Shopping Centre – they meet up to bust some moves, listen to some bangin’ tunes and just generally hang out.
The whole thing is organized by Contact Inc and Redcliffe Youth Service and has been developed in response to an identified increase in racism, violence, and crime amongst young people in the area.
Amazingly Westfield, who manage the shopping centre, have observed a marked decrease in crime at North Lakes since the project started a little over a year ago.
Both the North Lakes and iStreet projects show the success that can be created by engaging young people on their own terms, in a space where they feel comfortable.
