The floods may have dampened our enthusiasm for a while, but as of today The Edge is back in business – and we want you to help us celebrate.

We missed The Edge’s first birthday while our building was closed, but we can’t let that go by without a proper party! So on Saturday May 7 come visit The Edge as we celebrate the things we made in our first year, and all the exciting new things we have to come. (If you want to bake us a cake shaped like a giant “1” covered in smarties, that would be nice too)

The day will be a great way to see what goes on at The Edge. There will be workshops running, market stalls with local artisans showing off their wares. Plus we’ll have demonstrations from some of our Catalysts and Residents – you can learn how to make seed bombs or see the hacked clothing people made at the ThreadTech workshops.

There will be interactive sound installations (which you can still help design), a hacked up version of Rock Band for you to play in the auditorium.

And it’s all capped off by a night of awesome performance and music – including Laneous & The Family Yah, Joel Stern, The Videomatics, Ivy May Dillon and our very own Katie Wighton.

Oh, and you know us – it’s all free (with the exception of some workshops). Swing by and help us celebrate! Bring your mates or even a date!

The one thing The Edge doesn’t have so far is people editing footage to show what’s going on! I hope to remedy that in the coming weeks, but right now a little of this gap has been filled by Kyle McLean, who was commissioned to put together a projection mapping installation for the opening event. The budget wouldn’t stretch to provide a white, projection-friendly venue though, so he augmented the black, steel sculpture towering over The Edge building.

Kyle works in VVVV, and it’s fantastic to watch him patch a system together live. The video was shot on a Canon 5D MKII, which dealt beautifully with the relatively low light environment.

The Herd’s Urthboy hailed the up-and-comer as ‘destined to become a positive and very listenable force’. Ozhiphop.com crowned Rainman as ‘Queensland’s best kept secret’ with ‘an eloquence for song-writing rarely seen in hip hop’. Rainman has appeared live on Triple J, been featured in the internationally distributed Stealth magazine/CD and had music included in Rhythm and Poetry, a documentary detailing the evolution of Australian hip hop.

Through this music he has performed with international acts Girl Talk, Dan Deacon and Crystal Castles, and last year got to present his work and that of the emerging Australian chipmusic scene at the This Is Not Art festival in Newcastle.

The band spent a significant portion of 2009 grabbing the attention of party goers and music critics alike with their debut release of Ruined My Life, an EP that captures the intensity and fury of their live performance.

Felinedown’s engaging shows coupled with their song writing abilities saw the band wrap up last year with achievements such as national airplay on Triple j , being voted in the top ten of the Q Song rock category, having a song in the number one position on Australian internet radio for three straight weeks, and coming in at number 58 in the 4ZzZ Hot 100 for ’09. Make sure you catch their show at The Edge Launch Party and enjoy the ride.
