Open Lab 12-6pm

Open Lab at The Edge is when the Fabrication Lab and Makerspace is open to the community. We offer set times each week, where you (the public) can access quality, professional equipment like a Laser Cutter, 3D printers (we have many and in different formats), Sewing Machines and Overlockers, Soldering Stations, Tool Shop and general work benches.

The space is fit for all types of projects, assignments, prototypes, experiments, business ideas and any creation that needs space and/or access to professional equipment.

Along with the equipment and space we also offer great minds! Whether it’s chatting to the experienced Lab staff to obtain a cleaner etch on the Laser Cutter, or troubleshooting a poor cast from a 3D printed model – we have great minds and we like to share what we know.

Weekly Open Lab hours

  • Tuesday 12-8pm (drop-in use only, no online bookings)
  • Wednesday 12–6pm
  • Thursday 12–6pm (Hack the Evening commences from 5.30pm)
  • Saturday 12–6pm

New to The Edge’s Fabrication Lab?

If you’re new to The Edge, you’ll need to book yourself in for an induction on your chosen equipment (we run inductions on all resources). Once completed, you can book and use the equipment for free(!).

Inductions are $25 and run monthly in small groups of 10. We take you through the steps of how to use the equipment, troubleshooting and safety (which is numero uno!). Inductions are mandatory, so no induction means no use.  Check out the current inductions here.

Already Inducted?

Each resource requires an induction, so if you’ve successfully completed one or several inductions, the Fabrication Lab is truly your playground (remembering safety is #1). Just book ahead of time to secure your spot on the equipment and then sign-in once you arrive in the space. Due to the demand for use of the equipment, we can’t guarantee access unless you’ve pre-booked online.

Tuesday is a special day in the Fabrication Lab diary because it’s drop-in day! This means, no online bookings, just drop-in, add your name to a list, and wait for your turn. We’ve implemented this drop-in day for short runs, cuts and prints, allowing more short bursts of access to the equipment.

BrisMakerFest – What a day!

A few weeks ago we hosted the inaugural BrisMakerFest in partnership with Department of State Development. It was a Saturday all about making and maker culture in, industry, education, and community. There were 3D printers, drones and hackerspace, schools, teachers and genius students; all showcasing what is awesome and possible in Queensland. For me, BrisMakerFest highlighted that we are on par with the rest of the world, and ahead of some other states we look to for inspiration.

The building was buzzing all day with excitement, possibility, and maybes; three of our favorite things here at The Edge. Hundreds of people that had never thought of themselves as a part of the maker community now see things a little differently and that is the win we were looking for.

Of course, there was the announcement of the hackerspace grant program that will give Queensland Makerspaces the chance to better equip themselves and their offering to the community – $20,000 for a new space and $10,000 to expand what is already on offer in established space.

There are a lot of great reasons to think about what is possible out there in the broader community. If you think that might be you, drop by or drop us a line – we’re always more than happy to help.

Missed out on BrisMakerFest, or just want to reminisce? Check out some of the photos from BrisMakerFest in our Facebook album.
