TRYIT // Parametric design: Adapt a phone case to your phone

October 25, 2016, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

iPhone 7, Nokia 3310, 2 tin cans and a bit of string – every new model of mobile phone is slightly different in shape and size. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a phone case that could adapt to each model?

That sounds like a job for parametric design!

  • This TRYIT workhshop runs over two sessions: Tuesday 25 October and Tuesday 1 November 2016, from 6pm-8pm
  • You’ll need to attend both sessions to receive your induction and finish your phone case

Parametric design is a type of CAD (Computer Aided Drawing) that updates or adapts when you make changes to the dimensions, materials or the tools you’re using to fabricate your finished product with.

In this workshop participants will get an intro to the basics of parametric design in Autodesk’s Fusion360. Fusion360 is sophisticated Computer Aided Drawing, Machining and Engineering (CAD, CAM CAE) software that can be used to produce parametric designs with 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC machines. In this session you’ll have the opportunity to customise a design file to fit your smartphone and see it come alive on The Edge’s Laser Cutter.

During this workshop you will also complete an induction for the Laser Cutter. This means you’ll then be able to book the Laser and come and use it for free during our open lab hours.

This workshop is designed for those that have some experience in Tinkercad or Illustrator and are looking for a more powerful and professional tool.

  • Some experience using 3D printer/laser cutter software
  • Ages 16+
  • Creativity and curiosity!

About TRYIT Workshops

TRYIT Workshops are all about trying something new, testing new skills and experimenting. Launching a workshop series like TRYIT allows us to be reactive to what’s happening around us; it gives us a platform to offer programs that you’ve told us you want, and with a short turn-around time. Workshops generally run for 2 hours and explore a different skill, plus you’ll always have something to take home with you at the end.
