Create Your Own Comic or Zine: From Whoa to Go

In the lead up to this year’s ZICS fair (Zine and Indie Comics Symposium, 29-31 August), we are hosting a course on zine and comic book design and publication. Over the course of six weeks you’ll learn how to conceptualise, design, refine, print and distribute a zine or comic. When you finish the course you’ll be provided with 10 printed copies of your zine or comic and you’ll have a chance to stock your publication on the head table at the ZICS fair in late August.

The course outline is provided below. Please make sure all the dates are in your diary. An open studio will also be staffed by the ZICS team from 6-8pm on 5 August and 12 August for those that would like to continue working on their zine.


Week 1: Introduction to zines and comics, 6-8pm, 8 July
Find Your Voice. Learn about independent comics and zines, then brainstorm some ideas for your own. Facilitated by Andy Paine and Mehran Ghadiri.

Week 2: Writing for zines and comics, 6-8pm, 15 July
What do you want to say and how are you going to say it? Put together your comic story or zine content.Facilitated by Tamara Lazaroff and Dave Diezel.

Week 3: Creating Images for zines and comics, 6-8pm, 22 July
Creating Images for Comics and Zines. Develop the visual narrative for your comic. Create your own DIY art for your zine via cut’n’paste. Facilitated by Zac Smith-Cameron, Tom Magee and Philip Dearest.
Week 4: Editing zines and comics, 6-8pm, 29 July
Give your publication punch. Learn how to edit your zine or comic so it brings your work to life. Facilitated by Tamara Lazaroff and Dave Diezel.
Week 5: Look and layouts for zines and comics, 6-8pm, 8 August
Learn various print techniques, paper engineering and how to make your comic or zine stand out. Have a go with a Gocco printer. Facilitated by Jeremy Staples and Mungo Van Krimpen-Hall.
Week 6: Publishing and distributing your zine or comic, 6-8pm, 15 August
Learn how to print your publication cheaply and how to get people to read it. Facilitated by Elouise Quinlivan, Nat Karmichael and Terry Clayton.
